Protect finished surfaces
Show the full relationship between the stump and the concrete
Send one close photo of the stump base and one wide photo showing the driveway, sidewalk, curb, steps, and equipment route. Measure the narrowest gap between the wood or root flare and the finished surface.
Roots may extend below or beneath concrete even when they are not visible. Standard stump grinding removes reachable wood; it does not automatically expose or remove every root under a slab or walkway.

Separate stump work from concrete repair
Grinding can lower the stump and selected reachable roots, but damaged or lifted concrete may need a separate concrete contractor. The grinding scope should not assume that a slab will settle, level itself, or become structurally sound after wood is removed.
When concrete replacement is already planned, coordinate the desired excavation depth with that contractor before the stump is ground. This helps avoid paying twice for material removal or leaving roots in the future work area.
Plan chips, soil, and settling at the edge
Wood chips mixed with soil may settle next to a driveway or walkway. If the area will be patched, paved, or compacted, confirm whether chips should be removed and replaced with suitable fill rather than left in the cavity.
The final grade should move water away from structures and avoid creating a low spot beside the concrete.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can a stump be ground when it touches a sidewalk?
Sometimes, but safe reach depends on the stump shape, root flare, machine size, concrete condition, and available clearance. Photos and measurements are needed first.
Will grinding fix a lifted sidewalk?
Not necessarily. Removing reachable wood may be one step, but lifted or cracked concrete often needs separate evaluation and repair.
Can roots under a driveway be removed by a grinder?
Only roots that are safely reachable from the open side may be addressed. Roots directly beneath concrete usually require a different plan if the slab is not being removed.
Should chips be left beside concrete?
That depends on the next use. Areas that will be compacted, paved, or repaired often need chip removal and appropriate fill instead of wood-rich material.
