Use the deck plan to define the stump scope
Mark the full deck footprint and every bearing location
Ask the deck contractor to mark corners, stairs, posts, piers, footings, beams, and any required excavation. Share the plan before the stump quote is finalized so the work is matched to the structure rather than guessed from the visible stump.
A stump outside the finished deck edge may still conflict with a footing, stair landing, drainage route, or equipment path. Include these nearby features in the review.
- Deck perimeter and finished elevation
- Post, pier, and footing locations
- Stairs, landings, skirting, and utilities
- Required excavation and inspection access
- Material-delivery and construction routes
Keep organic material out of structural bearing areas
Wood chips, decaying roots, and loose soil are not substitutes for engineered or contractor-approved bearing material. The deck contractor should decide what must be excavated, removed, replaced, and compacted at each support location.
Standard stump grinding does not remove every root. If a footing or pier conflicts with remaining wood or roots, additional excavation may be required under the deck contractor’s direction.
Finish stump work before framing blocks access
Complete grinding, chip removal, utility identification, and any required excavation before posts, beams, stairs, or stored materials restrict equipment movement. Photograph the cleared area so both contractors can confirm the next step.
The deck contractor remains responsible for permits, code compliance, footing design, drainage, structural work, and inspections. Stump grinding is only one part of site preparation.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is normal stump grinding enough before a deck?
It may be enough outside structural bearing areas, but post, pier, footing, and excavation requirements should determine the final scope.
Can deck footings be placed over stump chips?
The deck contractor should specify suitable bearing material. Loose wood-rich material is generally not treated as prepared structural fill.
Should the deck plan be finished before grinding?
At minimum, the footprint and support locations should be known so the stump work can be coordinated with the actual construction plan.
Does grinding remove roots beneath every footing?
No. Standard grinding does not remove every buried root. Additional excavation may be needed where supports conflict with remaining material.
Who handles permits and structural decisions?
The deck contractor or appropriate licensed professional is responsible for permits, code, design, footings, drainage, and inspections.
